Monday Evening -- Welcome Drinks Reception and Poster Session

Oxford University Museum of Natural History

On the evening of Monday 14 July 2014, there will be a DHOxSS welcome reception from 7pm at Oxford University Museum of Natural History which has recently re-opened after a lengthy refurbishment. This reception gives you a chance to meet and talk to the other delegates and speakers. There will be a peer-reviewed poster session at this event and we encourage you to submit a poster abstract before the 1 May 2014 if you wish to present a poster. This reception includes drinks and nibbles, but not a full evening meal, and there is no additional charge for attending.

Tuesday Evening -- Guided Walking Tour of "Oxford Past and Present"

On the evening of Tuesday 15 July 2014, there is an Oxford Official Guided Walking Tour of "Oxford Past and Present". This is the main introductory tour of Oxford. The guide will take you through the heart of the historic city centre illustrating the history of Oxford and its University and describing the architecture and traditions of its most famous buildings and institutions.

There is no additional charge for DHOxSS delegates for this event but there are a limited number of places available. If you wish to attend, you must book it when registering for DHOxSS.

Wednesday Evening -- DHOxSS Dinner at Wadham College

On the evening of Wednesday 16 July 2014 the DHOxSS Dinner will be held in Wadham College Hall. A pre-dinner drinks reception is followed by a three-course meal in a stunning Oxford setting -- this is an event not to be missed! A menu for the DHOxSS dinner is available. There is no specific dress code for the event (you may choose to dress up, but it is not required). The cost of the DHOxSS dinner (£52.50) is not included in the registration fee.

Thursday Evening -- TORCH Open Lecture

Torch Public Lecture

Martin Roth, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, has agreed to give the annual TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities) open lecture at the DHOxSS 2014. This free public lecture will be on the evening of Thursday 17 July 2014 at a venue to be confirmed. Delegates from DHOxSS 2014 should reserve a place when registering for DHOxSS.

The Victoria and Albert Museum was founded during the tumult of the Industrial Revolution; a period of intense technological and social change. Today brings another such turning point, as we grapple with the consequences of the digital revolution. How are advances in digital design and media changing museum practice? And what curatorial principles remain the same, little changed from 19th century? The V&A holds a rich collection of ‘Ukiyo-e' - popular representations of everyday Japanese life from the 18th-19th centuries. Radical changes and fundamental continuities are both in evidence when, today, curators consider collecting ‘emojis', emoticons with distinctive features reflecting contemporary Japanese culture. Martin Roth, Director of the V&A and, formerly, Director General of Dresden State Museums, will consider these questions and more in a lecture mapping the future of museums in the digital age.

Friday Evening -- Informal Pub Trip

Victoria Arms Pub

On the Friday evening just after DHOxSS has ended some organisers and delegates of DHOxSS 2014 will be walking from Wolfson College lodge to the nearby Victoria Arms public house. We will be walking to the pub. There are two routes from Wolfson College, by street or by riverside footpath (depending on how adventurous you are). Plans may change depending on the weather. You will have to pay for any food or drink you consume.

The menus for the Victoria Arms are available online. They describe the pub as: "The Victoria Arms sits on the banks of The Cherwell River, just a short way from the dreaming spires of Oxford city centre, but you could be in the depths of the countryside. With large sweeping gardens down to the river we are a perfect spot in the summer, whether you walk, drive or come by river on a punt."
