Blockbooks

Project Description:

These woodcut and metalcut prints from the collections of the Bodleian Library represent early European printing of the 15th century, combining words and images in elaborate but easily-reproduced series, mainly intended for devotional use or teaching. The technique of woodblock printing was used to print the oldest surviving book, a Chinese Buddhist text from the 9th century now in the British Museum. The Bodleian blockbooks include editions of the Apocalypse, the Biblia Pauperum, Canticum Canticorum (the Song of Songs), and a text for teaching Latin, Donatus's Latin grammar. For more information about the collection see http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/csb/Blockbooks.pdf. Scalable images are hosted at http://bodley30.bodley.ox.ac.uk:8180/luna/servlet.
