Monumenta Asiae Minoris Antiqua Vols. IX-X: Images from the Cox Archive

Project Description:

The archive of notebooks, photographs and squeezes from Sir Christopher Cox's two Phrygian expeditions in 1925 and 1926 which formed the basis for Barbara Levick's and Stephen Mitchell's publication of volumes IX and X of Monumenta Asia Minoris Antiqua in 1988 and 1993 has been deposited in the Centre by Dr. Levick. The Centre has begun a project to digitise this material, starting with the photographs of inscriptions in MAMA volume X.

Both MAMA IX and X were published with extensive photographic documentation, but the constraints of publication costs and processes prevented the excellent negatives from Cox's expeditions from being printed at larger than contact print size. As a complement to the full editions of the texts of the inscriptions in MAMA IX and X, high resolution digitised images of the photographs and supporting material are being made available from the CSAD WWW server. As part of the project, the non-epigraphical material in the MAMA IX-X archive has also been digitised, and combined with material in the Cox archive at New College, to document the progress of the 1925-26 expeditions, and to tie the texts closely to their geographical contexts and modern findspots. A public exhibition documenting the MAMA IX, X, and XI expeditions has been on display in the Outreach Room of the Ioannou Classics Centre throughout 2009 and is in the process of being converted into an online resource.
